Make Everyday Earth Day! Become more sustainable at home.

Earth Day is celebrated all over the globe in late April. In Darien, families will gather throughout town to clean beaches, prepare garden beds, spread wood chips, and find other meaningful ways to contribute.

The Darien Nature Center wants you to continue contributing throughout the year by reducing the amount of trash we generate and finding new ways to reuse things we would plan to throw out.

Finding ways to extend the life of your clothing with mending, hand-me-downs, buying natural fibers, or renting for special occasions is a great way to reduce the number of garments in the garbage. You can also purchase good-quality items that will last longer and save money.

One easy way to reduce the number of items purchased is to repair or borrow instead of buy whenever feasible. You can opt for secondhand items at your local thrift store or swap shop. You can extend the life of many things by visiting your local cobbler for shoes or upholster for refreshed furniture instead of buying again.

You can also reduce daily waste by remembering your reusable bags or bringing your own cups and straws.

Small changes in your daily routine can significantly impact resources:

– Reduce the length of your shower;

– Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth;

– Turn off the lights when you leave a room; and

– Only run a dishwasher with a full load.

Make every day Earth Day!

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

Darien Pollinator Pathway: Pledge to support pollinators by not using pesticides and planting native species.

Darien’s Food Scrap Recycling Guide: Almost a quarter of what we toss in the trash is food, so using this free program is a great way to reduce the tonnage of waste that we send to Bridgeport to burn – plus, the food scraps are recycled into compost, which can be used to grow more food!

CORK COLLECTION

Did you know that cork is a highly renewable resource that can replace plastics in home flooring, walls, furniture, tableware, and much more?! Cork is 100% natural, biodegradable, and recyclable!

Please bring your real (non-plastic) corks to the drop-off bin located in our lobby.
