Summer Camp Weekly Themes

For Summer Camp 2024, we will be running six one-week summer camp sessions. Our experienced summer camp staff will share their love of adventure and nature with your camper, creating a summer to remember. All sessions include outdoor exploration, science experiments, hands-on animal encounters, nature-based arts and crafts and more.

Our Living Planet: Ages 4 - 6

Children must be 4 years old by June 24th, 2024 to participate in Our Living Planet.

Week 1: June 24 – June 28
  • The Sky Above Us! Have you ever wondered what makes the weather? Curious how the sun powers all life on Earth and why we have day and night? Why are birds called living dinosaurs and how can we identify them? Campers will look for answers to these questions and others through science experiments, games, animal encounters, and outdoor exploration.

Week 2: July 1 – July 3: (no camp Thursday, July 4)
  • The Water Around Us! In this 3-day week we will focus on water as a habitat and learn about the fish, frogs, turtles, and bugs that make the pond their home. Thursday of this week is the July 4’th holiday, but we hope you will opt-in to our add-on Friday! (See below)

Week 2: July 5: (add-on for Week 2 only)
  • We will continue our water themed fun on Friday, July 5th, which will include boat making and races, water play, stream exploration and scooping for critters at the pond! We hope you will join in the fun on this optional Friday!

Week 3: July 8 – July 12
  • The Earth Below Us! This week we will “dig” into topics such as rocks, fossils, underground habitats and soil. Campers will explore the nature center’s fascinating rock and fossil collection which reveal the secrets of Earth’s past. Campers will also explore the diversity and importance of the world of insects. Week 3 will also include nature art, outdoor exploration, animal encounters and water play.

Week 4: July 15 – July 19
  • In The Garden! Campers in Week 4 will help us launch our new “Sensory Garden” located behind the nature center! This educational garden will be a valuable teaching tool as we observe in real time the work of pollinators and learn their importance. Campers will also experience the joy of planting seeds and harvesting vegetables for our beloved animals! Campers will learn the super power of seeds, soil and plants and gain an appreciation for the earth that feeds us. Week 4 will also include nature art, outdoor exploration, animal encounters and water play.

Week 5: July 22 – July 26
  • Water Science! Did you know that every living thing needs water? Or that the water you drink today was around before the dinosaurs? This week our focus is on water and its many forms. With Cherry Lawn pond and stream as a starting point, campers will explore the water cycle in real life. As emerging scientists, our campers will investigate surface tension, water as a solvent and watersheds. Week 5 will also include nature art, outdoor exploration, animal encounters and water play.

Week 6: July 29 – August 2
  • Life in the Forest! Did you know 60% of Connecticut is forested? From the decomposers on the forest floor to the owls in the forest canopy, we will explore why Connecticut’s beautiful forests are so special. Through hands-on science investigations, art projects, games, animal encounters, and outdoor exploration, campers will begin to understand the tremendous diversity and connections of the natural world.
